That’s Ivan Handzhiev on accordion, part of Kabile, a great Bulgarian folk group that played in Bellingham, Washington last night. Kabile features a quintet of exceptional musicians: singer Donka Koleva, Dzheno Andreev on gaida (a type of bagpipe), Nikolay Doktorov on kaval (a type of flute) and Angel Krastev, one of the best percussionists I’ve ever heard, on tapan (the large drum on the right in the photo).

I have enough photos and audio for a slideshow; now it’s a matter of carving out the time to get it done.

If you’re interested, Kabile is still on tour, headed down the West Coast and then into Arizona, New Mexico and Texas before wrapping up in New York on Nov. 14. Tour schedule is here.
