A little blogging on a Canadian holiday Monday. There may be more later.
- Thomson Reuters axes 140 journalist jobs. The numbers from the recently announced cutbacks. Also: Layoffs coming to the Kansas City Star and Job cuts across Gannett Broadcasting as the pain continues.
- The Onion: Brilliant as Ever? A cover image that will make you laugh ’til you cry.
- Great audio starts in the field. A nice overview of solid audio gathering tips from Colin Mulvany at Mastering Multimedia. This guy knows has chops and we’re all thankful that he shares. Related: Angela Grant’s See with your ears.
- Web Journalist Says Web is Destroying Journalism. The headline doesn’t quite capture the story, which is a recap of a recent presentation by Joshua Micah Marshall. It’s more about how open, collaborative, networked ways of doing journalism are actually good for journalism but that the conditions that make it possible are, perhaps, bad for some journalists.
- Are Print Newspapers Alive and Well in Spain? At least they are for now, reports Jennifer Woodard Maderazo from Barcelona (I’m jealous) as she finds a lively and reader-supported Spanish newspaper scene.
- Compare Creative Vado Camcorder with Flip Video Camera. A look at the two $100 video point-and-shoots. All the talking points are more about convenience and size than they are about quality.
- World Press Photo: The Award Interviews. Short video interviews with award-winning photographs. A site to spend some time with. Via The Frontline.
- Ars Technica acquired by Conde Nast. This was the second of two instances last week (the other involving CNET and CBS; here’s Alan Mutter’s take on that) where media conglomerates bit off some not insignificant pieces of the web. Conde Nast also owns Wired.
- Joshua Klein’s vending machine for crows. Proving once again that corvids are the coolest birds.
