Starting the week with these:
- BASIC principles of online journalism: S is for Scannability. Paul Bradshaw is up the third of his five parts on doing journalism on the web. Lots of good, practical advice that’s a preview of his coming book.
- Who Put These Guys In Charge? (Why Newspapers Are Failing). Lots of people pointing to Douglas McLennan’s article on why newspapers are in trouble and are likely to remain there. He promises more later: I’ve added him to the newsreader.
- The Lourdes of twang. I don’t usually find the NYT’s Travel multimedia compelling, but this slideshow from a visit to the Martin factory in Nazareth, Penn. is a great example of how to use sound with images.
- Google Maps Without the Scripting. One more bookmark for the toolbox: quickly creating static Google Maps. Requires API key.
- 10-Minute Film School with Robert Rodriguez. There may be only a few lessons for video journalists in these two pieces, but the inside story of making big movies with little money is an awful lot of fun to watch. Via Richard Koci Hernandez.
