A few pointers, with commentary, as I watch the snow fall outside my window:
- Darkness at Noon — MSM Plays Along with Hamas Photo Staging. Hamas draws the blinds, lights candles, the media shoots away. I’m with Michael Totten on this: “This is really getting ridiculous, but it’s also a lot harder to get away with than it used to be.”
- Pay for a blog feed? Not going to happen. Subscriptions for blog RSS feeds? Hmm. There are some I would pay for, but not all 300+ in my feeder. And, besides, I wouldn’t have to, because sooner or later someone else would point to the best/most exciting/most important stuff anyway.
- The Mexican Suitcase… Wow! Robert Capa’s lost negatives. I find this hugely exciting.
- You know, you don’t have to do video. Stating the obvious but seemingly overlooked based on the number of sites apparently doing video for the sake of video. From Pat Thornton’s post: “When high school and college kids can provide better quality and content, you should really reconsider what you’re doing.”
- Guardian Supplement: making video. Andy Dickinson reports that this weekend’s Guardian included a good special section telling its readers all about making video. That ought to attract some readers.
- Roundup of reaction to Holovaty’s EveryBlock.com. Lucas Grindley rounds up the best commentary on EveryBlock.com There’s a lot there to chew on but none of it deals with one of the potentials for a neighbourhood information aggregator like EveryBlock to hugely disrupt local advertising.
- More things journalism can learn from porn. Steve Yelvington expands on Mark Luckie’s original post to ponder lessons from the grunt-and-groaners.
- Audio and Audio Slideshows. A page of very extensive links that accompanied a training session for journalists. Much, much here.
- Six roles, or job duties, of modern journalism. Howard Owens has written one of the signpost-for-modern-journalism posts that I need to spent some time thinking about. You should, too.
