I’ve been watching what’s happening in Burma with a combination of outrage and intrigue. The non-journalist in me is outraged at the brutality, while inspired by the bravery of those standing up for fundamental rights.

The journalist in me is intrigued — and also inspired — by the information that is pouring out of what is reported to be one of the most repressive regimes on the planet. First it was through the internet and, now that that internet has reportedly been turned off, it’s through cellphones and whatever other means are available.

(One online publication that has been able to keep the flow of news going is Mizzima News, which has text, photos and videos. There’s a blog (in Burmese), too.)

Dan Gillmor has a post today that includes this quote:

I recently hosted journalists from developing nations at a Berkeley workshop. I told them — some who live and work in places where it’s physically dangerous, not just economically difficult, to be journalists — that they humble the rest of us.

And so, I think, do all of who are those marching for basic rights and getting their story out to the world.
