Tom Abate at Mini Media Guy has a nice post on writing feature stories.
Drawing on a recent gig teaching an adult ed course in the craft, Tom puts together a nice story of his own that deals with all the basics — and not-so-basics — in an enlightening and even entertaining package. A sample:
…the feature story is something that’s nice to know. It simply not in the need-to-know category. And that fact dictates every step of its its creation, from the germination of the idea, through the reporting and organizing, to the hoped-for sale to the editor who will put it before readers. And it is those readers who put the feature story to the test: what the hell is this, and is it worth finishing?
Worthy reading for those learning this writing thing, and for those of us who need the occasional reminder what it is we’re trying to do.
