You don’t need to read too deeply into the June ABC newspaper numbers from Britain to get the story: it’s there in the headlines over the stories at the Guardian’s media blog:

Football fever does not lift quality daily sales

Daily tabloids struggle in June

Standard loses nearly 10% on May

When you read the individual stories, there are some successes. The Guardian, for instance, buoyed by a series of giveaways that included World Cup soccer star postcards and nature wall charts, posted gains. But the overall trend for both tabs and quality dailies was down from a year ago.
