A couple of notes from the world of newspapers seem to confirm some of the emerging trends.
Editor’s Weblog reports that NewsCorp is going to unleash a daily freesheet in London, a 48-page full-colour effort that will include reader-contributed content. Another interesting twist: distributors will be linked via PDAs so they can figure out, on the fly, the best spots to get the paper into the hands of the target audience. This is part of a developing, highly-competitive freesheet market in London.
And, via News Designer word that the first American daily to switch to the Berliner format has hit the streets. The Lafayette Journal & Courier is a Gannett test of the smaller paper. Size is 12 inches by 18.5 inches, positioning it nicely between a tab and broadsheet. I didn’t fully appreciate how nice the Berliner is for readers until I held a copy of The Guardian in my hands earlier this year. It didn’t seem to be so much a downsizing as it did a “right-sizing.” I won’t be surprised when more newspaper (driven by the chase for readers and ways to combat newsprint prices) make the switch.
Note: News Designer has some images comparing old and new, and some interesting discussion in the comments.
