The Knoxsville News Sentinel has a two-minute slice-of-life video from a local shooting range up at its web site, a little piece of journalism that suffers a little (but not much) from some quality issues. The fact it’s there isn’t what’s interesting, it’s that it was shot using a $300 Sony digital still camera. Terry Heaton at Pomo Blog has this to say:

Firstly, this is not even a “real” video camera, or is it? Granted, it’s not broadcast quality video, but it works just fine in a smaller, online resolution. And what will it be like five years from now? The point is people in the industry are bitching about what my clients are doing in Nashville with the VJ concept of newsgathering, when a newspaper (probably more than one) is putting simple pieces like this online with what looks like a still camera. [Note: The last sentence refers to Terry's work helping TV news stations convert from two-man crews to single video journalists. There's much more about that at his site.]

Secondly, let me repeat what I’ve said a million times. The local newspaper is beginning to compete with television stations (and lots of everyday folks) for the video news niche in your market. TV executives simply cannot overlook what’s happening here.

I’ll repeat what I’ve said, although not quite a million times: the explosion in easy-to-use technology and broadband delivery, means the early promises of convergence are starting to be realized without the need for media companies to partner up. More and more newspapers have added their own audio and video. When you can produce video for the web using a consumer-level camera, the game changes considerably.

  2. [...] Incepand de la ziarele nationale (The New York Times, USAToday) si pana la cele locale (The Dallas Morning News, Chicago Tribune) au inclus stiri multimedia in paginile sale online. [...]
