Some recent posts dealing with the skills journalists and journalism organizations now need.
- Think like a journalist. This is aimed at ordinary folk, but the NewTrust piece does offer a nice, basic overview of the mental skills that go with the craft.
- Introducing: the journalist of the future. A very good post by Adam Westbrook, and some very good comments. Needs to be read and pondered (but not blindly followed) by anyone involved in journalism or heading into it.
- Revamped Journalist’s Role More About Mindset Than Multimedia Tricks. Alfred Hermida’s post at MediaShift needs to be on your reading list.
- Do You Have These 11 Traits of Highly Creative People? I’m generally leery of such lists, but this one seems to hit a lot of nails squarely on their heads. Any number of these are good traits to develop to further your journalism.
- Breaking Down All The Silos In One Hour Or Less. Very sound recipe for sharing, communicating and opening up the newsroom.
- Crucial reading on the evolution of news, as it stands today. All the skills in the world won’t help without a critical understanding on how news, the way it is covered and the way it is delivered are changing. Ryan Sholin has provided a great, annotated list of what you should be reading to keep up with it all. Highly recommended.
