Okay, this may take a little explaining.
We didn’t want a dead tree that would have to be tossed out and recycled at the end of the season. But we didn’t want a live cedar, pine or fir either, because our plans for the landscaping don’t include any more of that type of evergreen.
What we wound up with is a strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) which, according to WIkipedia, “is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe north to western France and Ireland.”
I’ll admit it doesn’t seem very traditional, but it will look very nice alongside the house when it blossoms next autumn.
Besides, the presents will fit nicely enough under it.
