A few more shots from the Canon G10 as I continue to test its rich set of features and what it all means for how I shoot. All of these were shot in P mode. Final output is through Photoshop’s “save for web & devices” at “high” setting. Specific notes on the images after each one.

Shot out the front window, just before 8 a.m. this morning, at ISO 800. Lots of grain. The original has a touch of motion blur. Like all the images, this one has been down-sampled twice, once coming out of Aperture and once in Photoshop. A small amount of sharpening has been added, but I didn’t mess with tonal settings.

Shot out the window of a Starbucks on Granville Street (hence the reflections). ISO is 400, with EV set to -1. Some slight tonal manipulation in Aperture. Shot with autofocus and centre-weighted metering. Manual focus and spot metering tests still to come.

From the window of the No. 8 bus. Auto everything; exposure reduced about one stop in Aperture.

I should have taken more time with this, but I was shooting with the camera in one hand and umbrella in the other. Fully zoomed out. The auto focus locked onto the branch quickly. This needed massaging in Aperture: a touch of saturation and a little opening of the shadows. It’s not razor-sharp, but that’s my fault. Fill-flash may have helped, but I haven’t started playing with the flash yet. I realize now, I could also have dialed in the built-in ND filter. Oh well; still learning.

I’m starting to feel more comfortable with the camera and what it can do. Having the EV and ISO dials at hand is great for quick control, the autofocus is quite snappy. Grain at 200 and 400 is acceptable for web display (and likely for print). The camera doesn’t have the light-gathering capabilities of a DSLR, but I really like working with it.
