The demands of the new semester have put a real crimp in blogging lately, but I’m trying to get back on some sort of schedule. (Note: I occasionally throw out a link or two at Twitter, if you want to follow me there.)
- Outside.in offers blogs free story maps. This is a handy tool for any of you doing local storytelling.
- No Sale. Yes, newspapers are for sale. The fact that no one is buying means something, Marks Potts writes. - Radio listening down. Another reminder: it’s not just print that’s being disrupted, needs to be reinvented.
- Bad news for newsprint exports. International competition is one reason B.C. newsprint exports are ‘way off. I can think of several others.
- Annenberg revives the Online Journalism Review. A wise decision is made. Robert Niles is coming back, too.
- Evangelizing Twitter. Some good advice on newspapers can make good use of Twitter. I think it’s safe to say Twitter has gone beyond the either-you-get-it-or-you-don’t stage. Related: I’m mostly impressed at how well my local daily is starting to use its Twitter feed.
- Drudge Report: News Site That Sends Readers Away With Links Has Highest Engagement. More proof of the power of the link. Scott has a part two, too: Why Every News Site Should Put a Continuously Updated News Aggregation on the Homepage.
- Journalism Grads Need Basic Skills Plus Openness, Flexibility. Take a look at Alfred Hermida’s brief video reports from the recent ONA, featuring some industry heavyweights tell us what they’re looking for in new journalists. Watch and learn. Related: ONA taught me at least 10 things, from Kirk LaPointe. Also related (somewhat): At this own site, Alfred has a great list of 31 essential online tools for journalists.
- Young Journalist Blogging Carnival – Why I’d Fire Everyone. Dave Cohn calls his post a thought experiment that’s going to piss some people off. He’s right, but there are a number of interesting ideas/concepts in there.
- Why Mass Media Content is Dumbing Down. Something to read and consider while you’re waiting for part three of Vin Crosbie’s must-read on Transforming the American Newspaper.
