The Vancouver Province gets points for using its newsroom blog to tip me to a story that has a direct effect: the temporary rerouting of one of the buses that takes me to the college. That’s news I can use.

Except I really can’t, because the change is given in text and it names street I don’t really know and can’t place. The result: I knew there was change coming that might affect me, but I didn’t know how.

The folks at the Province were thinking like journalists and not readers. In little more time than it took to write and post the text, someone could have hopped over to Google maps, laid out the temporary routes and embedded the resulting map in the blog.

Come to think of it, the whole think flies in the face of one of the exhortations regularly visited upon writers: Show, don’t tell.
