I’m about to launch on my first video editing session for a while and am feeling slightly, as always, overwhelmed.

I shot Greek Day here in Vancouver yesterday and have just captured the footage from the camera. It appears I shot efficiently: 20 minutes of video taken over the course of about three hours and, after a quick run-through to tag the clips, there’s a lot there that I like.

Score on for repeated practise leading to better working habits.

The hard part is next: pulling a story out of an event. Before I started shooting yesterday, I realized why TV covers festivals the way it does: some clips with reporter voiceover. It’s because there’s no narrative to festivals. There are a bunch of events linked only by theme and proximity.

It’s easy enough to show some of those events, but to show them in a way that makes sense, that gives some idea of story, without narration or overuse of titles…ah, there’s the rub.

I had a concept, a central organizational device in mind, that came to me while I was shooting. Now all I have to do is make it work.

If you don’t hear from me for a while….
