And away we go for another year.

  • Overused and abused. Perfect storm tops the list of words that should be banished for misuse, overuse or general uselessness, an annual end of the year gift from Lake Superior State University. Also on the list, and heartily endorsed by Deborah Potter at Advancing the Story, is the overused-to-the-point-of-meaninglessness “emotional.”
  • “You Don’t Understand Our Audience”: What I learned about network television at Dateline NBC. A long, thoughtful, must-read at MIT’s Technology Review by John Hockenberry about the state of TV journalism. This is a piece that needs to be widely read and discussed by those who care about media.
  • Photos of the Year. The year-end tradition rolls out all over the place. The New York Times has nine themed sets of great photojournalism (although the accompanying audio wouldn’t play for me), MSNBC’s presentation is outstanding, combining news and feature images with music and the voices of witnesses, reporters and anchors, and the Best of the Post at the Washington Post features video, photo galleries, single images and more. Expect to spend some time there. The Vancouver Sun’s collection includes some interesting comments on each of the images from the photographers, but the images roll by too quickly to be easily read. The only controls are play and pause, so expect to hit the “pause” button a lot. And a reminder that Multimedia Shooter is collecting links to newspapers’ photos of the year site. There are seven links in the comments so far.
