Bits and pieces of interesting media-related news:

  • Another Day, Another Slam on Journalistic Integrity. Dennis Dunleavy: “In an age of instant communication, as well as the pressures of commerce, design decisions run the risk of further encouraging the common public perception that the media cares more about shock value and making money than it does about getting the story straight. All apologies aside, the damage is what it is — people aren’t always buying into the notion that what they see and read can be trusted.”
  • Thinking Strategically. Mark Potts says it’s time not only for everyone involved in the newsroom to think strategically but for newspaper leadership to let everyone know what’s going on and where they want to go.
  • Introducing: the most comprehensive student media online contest evah! Bryan Murley has the details: it will be interesting to see the winners once they’re announced next spring and see what the next generation of journalists is up to. (And no, my students aren’t ready for this quite yet: maybe next year.)
  • Three multimedia stories well told. Pointage to three nice pieces of storytelling. I especially like the NY Times’ Free and Uneasy, which may be the compelling use of an audio and photos I’ve seen.
