The book shelf

I came across this this morning, against one cold, concrete wall of a pedestrian underpass near downtown Vancouver. The explanation, on the sign at the bottom left, reads:

ACT OF ATONEMENT

For throwing out hundreds of valuable books during a recent move.

What do you do with books that you longer read?
What keeps you from giving your favourite books away?

These books were picked up from the Salvation Army on their way to
being pulped.

LOOK, TAKE AND ENJOY

This is elaborate and inspired. Public art? Act of contrition? I don’t know, but it stopped me cold.
