A few bits and pieces on the tech that’s serving the new needs of journalists:
What every iMovie HD user should know about iMovie ’08. The latest version of Apple’s consumer-grade video editing program isn’t as bad as some would say. This is a handy list of what’s good and what’s missing. I haven’t played extensively with the newest version, but what I have seen makes me think it’s a good tool for creating quick-hit stuff in the field, when time matters.
Zoom H4 2.0 firmware update fixes almost everything. Brad Linder has a good post detailing what’s changed with the new firmware for the Zoom H4 recorder. I need to go get it, it appears.
Finally, this isn’t a news item, it’s a recommendation. Any of you looking to get into video, or to upgrade to HD video, really should take a serious look at Canon’s HV20. I’ve been working with mine for several months now, primarily in auto-everything mode, and it’s a hell of a camera. The auto focus is superb, it works well in low light and the image stabilization is rock-solid at the widest angle of view and works well through the mid-point of the 10x zoom. It’s half-the-price of the more professional models (I paid $1300 CDN, but saw it on sale for just over $1,000 CDN today) but it’s given me everything I was looking for in a camera. And more.
