Japanese man killed in Burma: Pictures.

The Japanese man is Kenji Nagai, an AFP photographer, one of nine people reported killed in Rangoon demonstrations today.

Related: Here in Vancouver, a group called Voices of Burma, is organizing a number of campaigns to help bring the protests in Burma, and the crackdown, to greater public attention. There’s a campaign to get people to wear a red shirt for Burma tomorrow and a candlelight vigil at 5 p.m. 4:30 p.m. at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Much of the organization and promotion of these events, and others, is taking place through Facebook.

Update: Rallies are also planned for the VAG at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and at 5 p.m. next Thursday, and there will be nightly vigils outside the Chinese embassy in Vancouver to try and pressure China to take a strong stand against the Burmese dictatorship.

    Mark,

I think it is good of the press to be taking such a stand against the military regime in Myanmar/Burma, but I wonder right now how much real information we are getting. I see the pictures and they are horrifying, but when most of the news reports we are getting are coming out of western Thailand, do we really know what is happening. Here in the UK, depending on the news service you get your info from, the numbers of protestors and casualties fluctuate. On the BBC, in the morning, they announced 6 people had been killed on Thursday. That afternoon the number was down to four.

I know that the numbers can change, and sometimes the facts aren’t always readily known in a place like Burma, but this story has a likeness to Iraq in that the info is rapidly changing.
