Here’s an oddity for you.

After I redesigned this site a few weeks back, I noticed a sharp dip in the number of visitors that Sitemeter was reporting. Because it was early September, I chalked it up to it being the end of summer and back to work/school time. Less time to surf, you know?

A week or so ago, I remembered reading years back that the higher the Sitemeter code is placed in the HTML, the higher the number of reported visits. I moved the code from about two-thirds of the way down the file to near the top and, sure enough, Sitemeter site visits bounced back to the previous numbers.

Could all be coincidence, of course, but it reinforces my feeling that the numbers I get from Sitemeter, Google Analytics, Feedburner, etc. are great for tracking trends but not so much day-by-day numbers.
