Getting caught up after a couple of long classroom sessions:
- Beast made from newspaper. Try doing this with your fancy online publication!
- Newspaper business watch. A few headlines on the current state of the industry: NY Times Co. to lay off 500 and Newspaper Roundup: Online Ad Revs At McClatchy Dip 3.1 Percent; Lee’s Online Ads Rise 48 Percent and Gannett, New York Times Stocks Hit 10-Year Lows.
- For me, Google News + AP = frustration. Is Google’s deal with AP resulting in the “theft” of local stories that make the wire? Don Day tells the tale and, for local newspapers, it ain’t pretty.
- Murdoch to dismantle WSJ pay wall. Reports are he’s dropping hints that the final nail will be driven into the coffin of online subscriptions for newspapers.
- A bad photo gallery idea. What Melissa sez. Just ’cause we have the technology, doesn’t mean we have to use it. Compare and contrast to this piece on The Beatles.
- When it rains it rains advertising from heaven. Tom Abate writes that he’s going to track advertising trends a little more closely and he’s off to a flying start, particularly with news of more disruption, this time for the creatives.
