Brilliant.

Andy Dickinson has done a hands-on with the new iMovie — which has drawn considerable fire for what it doesn’t have — and He likes it, he really likes it.

He reports that there’s depth to the program, which isn’t immediately obvious, largely because it’s integrated with other Mac programs, including GarageBand, for audio tweaking, and Final Cut Express and Pro, through XML files. Andy lays out what a quick and workable flow for newspaper video folk that takes advantage of that.

I’m comfortable using QuickTime Pro and the now-old iMovie for quick edits, saving Final Cut Express for finer work. Part of the reason is that my Canon digicam and LaCie external hard drive doesn’t always play well together when it comes to capturing clips from the camera. I usually have to capture with iMovie and then transfer the clips to Final Cut. If I’m already in iMovie….

Based on Andy’s in-depth report, I’m going to have to give the new iMovie a hard look. Once, that is, I get a new laptop that it will work with.
