From the ‘net today:
- Running the Numbers: Why Newspapers Are Screwed. An unpersuasive look at newspaper economics, based on some probable suppositions and some made-up financial assumptions. Also see Why newspapers are not screwed for a detailed rebuttal.
- Why shoot newspaper video? For Ryan Sholin, the answer is “because we can.” But Ryan’s post is much more about how than it is why.
- Gannett Launches 100 Local Mobile Sites. The headline pretty much says it all about one place media really needs to be. Note the word “local.”
- No Holy Grail For Online Video Ad Model, But Various Formats Find Their Converts. Media has the online content thing more or less in hand (although hardly perfected): it’s the advertising that’s still hugely in play. Paid Content has a nice post about some experiments in bringing in bucks without turning off viewers.
- Ways to Improve Newspaper Websites. Another wiki for sharing observations and experiences, this one from The Bivings Report. Via Paul Bradshaw.
- Less is more! A Reuters column, by John Voos, examines images that show less, while suggesting much more. I don’t think that all of the images work particularly well, but it is a good addition to the conversation about powerful image-making, and applies to video as well as stills.
- Fire dancers light up the night. Angela Grant has a great, unconventional video from San Antonio. I love the fact that it’s largely shot as is and not bathed in artificial light, giving a real feel for the story and producing some striking images.

Thank you Mark!
