Three new (at least to me) how-tos have popped up on the web, two dealing with video, the other with converting still images to grayscale.

One of the video entries is Top Ten Online Filmmaking Techniques. It’s a shortish post and seems primarily tied to dramatic filmmaking, but that doesn’t mean it has no value for those learning video for journalism. I like it in part because I recoil a little from the folks who tell us not to zoom, pan, use transitions and the like, when we have an audience with a rich (and well understood) visual literacy based on decades of television watching and moviegoing to draw on as we create our journalistic stories. It seems a shame not to make use of that.

Also on the video front: Working inside the box 2, which deals with the difference between what you see through the viewfinder and what gets captured by the tape. Being aware of the differences is important.

Creating Black & White Images, meanwhile, is a shortish video featuring several quick-and-easy steps for controlling the conversion of full colour images to grayscale in Photoshop. There’s nothing groundbreaking here but the techniques work and it’s a quick overview to some of the many possible methods.
