A few items to wrap up the weekend:

  • Metro 2006 in numbers. Thee international freesheet pioneer has made money for the first time.
  • Proofreading test. You’ll need a paper and pen for this British-based test. Great fun and a good test of the eye.
  • Series wrapup: Do you need a J-degree? The blog Aggie Journalists did some short interviews with editors about the value of a journalism degree. The consensus: it’s far down the list of considerations.
  • Citizen Media: A Progress Report. Dan Gillmor takes a long look at where we are with the concept of citizen media. He has 10 major points, all worth a careful read.

Well, the death of A&M’s journalism department is the reason my blog exists, so I’m not sure irony is exactly applicable. I wanted to note, though, that the newspapers that responded to my survey are mainly very large newspapers. Most of the editors said that previous daily newspaper experience was essential (i.e. these are not entry-level papers), and in my experience I know that to be true. So the question for our journalism students at A&M is how necessary a journalism degree is to get hired at an entry-level job. I’m hoping that more small to mid-sized papers will respond to my query so that a broader sample will provide a better picture.

    Muchas gracias for reading/linking!

Ironic that A&M killed their journalism department in 2003.
