No, I’m not starting a new feature here; I just happen to have a number of browser windows open with interesting stuff about photography and photojournalism.
- TED Talks: James Nachtwey. A stunning call to journalism and the power it has, from one of my heroes. His acceptance speech for the 2007 TED award is one of the most inspirational pieces I have heard in some time. Please go watch, listen and be inspired. Better still, download the video and share it with friends and colleagues.
- Joseph Koudelka. From 1987, a conversation between Frank Horvat and the ground-breaking Czech photographer. A sample quote: “For me, the most beautiful thing is to wake up, to go out, and to look. At everything. Without anyone telling me ‘You should look at this or that.’ I look at everything and I try to find what interests me, because when I set out, I don’t yet know what will interest me.”
- Photo captions that say too much: more trouble for photojournalists. Juan Antonio Giner takes a good, long look at some of the controversy that has erupted around Spencer Platt’s award-winning photo of Beirut residents touring the war damage to their city. Lots of ground for ethical discussion here.
- Online: pictures still static, upholstered by audio. Keith Jenkins of the Washington Post with some thoughts on the still evolving role of photojournalism on the web.
