Catching up on some media-related reading on the web has thrown up these (more to come in a bit):
- Update 1: New citizen media site for Catholics. The headline pretty much says it all. If I were a reporter on the religious beat, this would be in my bookmark folder.
- Update 2: Sponsors, Subscriptions, and Prizes. Interesting way to build readership and community connection: Kitsilano.ca is giving up Google ads for local sponsorship. Sponsorship costs business a $50 gift certificate, which is awarded to a reader at the end of every month. No revenue there, but a smart move.
- Knowledge Managment In The Digital Newsroom. Visual Editors with details of, and a recommendation for, yet another book it looks like I need to read.
- The Elements of Typographic Style Applied to the Web. I’m a sucker for good typography, which means this is a web site I’m going to have to bookmark.
- Major League Baseball Subscription Service To Carry Ads; 45 Advertisers Back It. Both subscribers and advertisers as a revenue source. And yet another competitor for legacy media, and this one has the power to control access to its events. Update: See Paid Content for an example of why this may matter
- Whatever the excuse, much of what we see in print seems forced, conventional, but most of all, it’s just mediocre in every sense of the word. Long title, good post by Dennis Dunleavy.
- Knight, WAN: Please Share Knowledge Freely, Immediately. Len Witt challenges the Knight Foundation and World Editors Forum to let their information go free for the sake of those who want to help make journalism better.
