While some of us old newspaper folk are struggling to come to terms with video storytelling, the San Jose Mercury News’s Dai Sugano, David M. Barreda and others are blazing some new paths, at least for newspapers.
Two recent pieces, Friday Night: 7 Bamboo and Spring Glow use a combination of videos, stills, sound, quick-cut edits and more to explore a karaoke bar and new fashions in what can only be described as impressionistic and immersive ways.
There are videos that extend the newspaper reporting and, I think, deepen the experience for the reader. It goes beyond the way many newspapers are using video as either standalone storytelling or recapping the print story in quick-hit video format. Both pieces seem to me to be logical extensions of what I’ve taken to calling story-showing, using the strengths of video to put me in a place.
Nice work and another solid example of where the experimentation with video is taking newspapers. (An aside: At what point are we going to need a new term to replace “newsPAPER” given everything that’s going on?)
