I should have seen this coming: the Canadian freesheet 24 Hours is moving into Calgary and Edmonton. Announcement of the launches comes a week after the launch of CanWest’s free RushHour in Calgary and the announcement from Metro that it’s going to publish in the two Alberta cities.
Much like the situation here in Vancouver a couple of years ago, the two cities have gone from two dailies to five in a blink. And, also like the situation here in beatiful, sunny (finally) Vancouver I suspect this is more about protecting advertising markets than it is delivering journalism.

I agree with your comment regarding the new Calgary and Edmonton free dailies. They are a huge marketing scoop, but as a former employee of the Sun/Bowes chain in Alberta, it’s been my experience that more competition for the best, latest, most accurate news is often a good thing for the journalists (generally young) who are required to write it. The fatcats may get fatter and the journalists live on itchiban, but rest assured this internship into the newspaper world can only make for better writers.
