Not much surfing time today, but I did come across these, which you may find interesting:

  • “MacGuyver” theme song, solo acoustic guitar. Adrian Holovaty takes a break from doing innovative journalism to show off yet another skill. I’m jealous: he has a nicer guitar than I do, and plays better, too.
  • FFMpegx: Make FLV for free. This comes after I’ve plunked down many, many bucks for Sorenson’s excellent program, Squeeze. I’m constantly amazed at the amount of free software that is making online journalism easier and easier to get into.
  • Canadian site finds new ways to elicit reader reports. Tish Grier takes a good look at Vancouver-based Orato, an interesting and apparently thriving site for first-person and citizen journalism. Interesting things are happening at the site, but this, from Orato’s corporate policies, has always given me pause: “Orato has the exclusive rights to content published on the site, enabling us to administer and exploit it via syndication, one-time selling, reprinting and any future options the market and the technology available permit. Orato also holds copyright to the stories it commissions.” No mention there of sharing such proceeds with the citizen journalists.
  • Where to sell your digital photos online. J.D. Lasica points to a mini-guide to places that will pay for citizen photojournalism.
