Some findings from Friday evening surfing (which says something about my life):

  • Huffing about the blogosphere. Deborah Jones at Canadian Journalist writes one of the most common-sense and down-to-earth posts about “the new media” that I’ve read in some time. Short and to the point.
  • Lagardere print giant goes digital. Editor’s Weblog reports that a leading French magazine publisher has announced it will likely get rid of its print titles, in favour of digital, over the next three years.
  • Chris Peck On Advancing Excellent Journalism. Leonard Witt reports on a four-point rules of engagement for 21st century journalism. The four points are (perhaps necessarily) broad and fuzzy, but there are some interesting thoughts there. I do find it curious that one of the four points is to help “future newspaper owners” develop a business model. What about current newspaper owners?
  • Got a question? Need an answer?. Online Journalism Review has launched a discussion board “for online journalists seeking advice, discussion of industry news, personnel notes and job listings.”
  • Is video the best use of your resources? Mindy McAdams, riffing on a couple of posts, has some answers to the question. My take? It’s not if you’re doing video because it’s hip; it is if you’re throwing video into the toolbox of storytelling techniques and use it when it fits.
