Professional journalists insist that they are what we most need to keep good journalism going. While I half-heartedly agree, I can’t help wonder why the profession keeps shooting itself in the foot and, apparently, is determined to prove that journalism is too important to be left solely in the hands of the pros.

The latest? TPM Cafe is reporting that CNN (the most trusted source) has aired not one but two reports, by political commentator Jeff Greenfield and celeb feature journalist Jeanne Moos, that “humourously” examine potential U.S. presidential candidate Barak Obama. They’ve riffing on three things: how close “Obama” is to “Osama,” the fact Obama’s middle name is Hussein, and the Obama’s favoured no-tie look which, apparently, reminds Greenfield of Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Yeech.

UPDATE: Kevin Drum has a great line about this:

Channeling our inner idiot 24 hours a day hardly makes our lives richer.
