Items of interest from the mediascape:

  • The Google Brilliance applied to Newspapers and Local Media. Mark Cuban is thinking outside the box for local media and figures one of the strengths is the sales force. Why not use it, he asks, to you “put yourself in the position to become the dominant force for local advertising in your markets, NO MATTER WHAT PLATFORM those ads appear on.”
  • Grading Newspapers’ Website Progress: B-. Steve Outing surveys the state of newspaper websites and offers, in my opinion, an over-generous grade, accompanied by words of warning: newspapers aren’t doing nearly enough, fast enough. (NOTE: This is a column in Editor & Publisher and their stuff tends to disappear behind the paywall; read it soon.)
  • BBC News launches first user-generated programme. Newspapers may be lagging, but the BBC seems to be in continuous innovation mode.
