An interesting report by John Thompson at journalism.co.uk on a Reuters Newsmakers Event and discussion about paying for contributions from the public. Thompson does a good job of dealing with the complex issues involved, and the variety of responses.
I think it’s incumbent on newspapers to treat members of the public fairly when dealing with exclusive content, both in terms of paying and in respecting the continuing rights of members of the public. We can’t expect the person on the street to know the ins-and-outs of copyright and reproduction rights. We shouldn’t expect newspapers to exploit that.
