J.D. Lasica and Elisa Camahort out some bloggers who freely “borrowed” from a San Francisco Chronicle article for their own reports on the recently-concluded BlogHer conference. J.D. writes:

It’s called original writing, people. If you borrow from someone else’s writing — whether they’re a blogger, newspaper writer, whatever — you need to attribute it.

If you can’t string together some original thoughts, in your own words, then don’t blog.

Exactly. If we bloggers expect to be taken seriously, particularly as we assault the gates of journalism, we’d better make sure we’re operating honourably and ethically. Which means giving credit where credit is due — signalling when you’re quoting, sourcing your quotes and citations and linking to your sources, so your readers can check for themselves. All of this isn’t a matter of applying “journalism ethics” to blogging, it’s an issue of personal ethical behaviour.
