Newly-released circulation figures for U.S. dailies show the decline continues, with major metro areas hit particularly hard. Overall average circulation is 1.9 per cent lower, but the figure was more than double that in some cities. Interestingly, the New York Times recorded a very modest circulation increase.

The usual suspects are named, along with some new ones, including increased competition from the free dailies in major urban centres.

Colby Atwood, another analyst, adds: “That young people aren’t reading newspapers is a pretty fatal formula for any business. If all your customers are dying off, you’ve got to be concerned, and that’s what’s happening in the newspaper industry.”
