The Washington Post is one of the premier newspapers in the U.S., with a distinguished history and a continued drive to quality journalism, in print and online. Despite that, it can’t survive the downward drift in circulation that is afflicting newspapers everywhere. Jim Romenesko reports:
Washington Post executive editor Leonard Downie Jr. told his staff at a Nov. 2004 meeting: “Our journalistic excellence has gone hand [in] hand with our circulation and financial strength. That is why the newspaper’s circulation decline is so worrying — even though the overall reach of our journalism has grown significantly through washingtonpost.com and our television and radio appearances. And that is why it is very important that the newspaper do everything that it can to slow, stop and reverse the slide in circulation.” Over the past two years, WP sales slid 5.2% daily and 3.9% on Sunday.
