I’ve finally had a chance to read the Vancouver Sun two-page take on blogging, and it’s not bad, but…

…how the hell do you write an article about blogging, an article that includes a sidebar that highlights some of B.C.’s bloggers, without using one single URL? Which editor made the decision to tell people about bloggers without telling them how to access them?

And there is a curious lack of information, too, when it comes to the one section of the article that deals with a blogger breaking news (the Prem Vinning case), where all the information is provided, except the name of the blogger/journalist — Sean Holman. A little professional jealousy on the part of some newsroom-bound desker, perhaps?

As I said, the article is okay, but just that. The way it’s structured, anyone who stops reading after the first half is going to be left with the impression that blogging is all about personal journals. The second half deals with bloggers as commentators on serious issues, but almost glosses over the journalism that some bloggers are doing.

I’m not among the corner of the blogosphere that froths at the mouth whenever they feel slighted by mainstream media. Doug Ward is a good writer and a good reporter. But somewhere along the line, either in writing and editing, the Sun fell a lot short. Let the conspiracy theorizing begin.

Let’s do it. Write real articles about what’s going on in the Vancouver blogosphere. Send me articles, links, whatever. I won’t bury them in comments, I’ll set up a new category (or even a new site) and do my part in getting stuff out in whatever (small) way I can. Any takers?

hey man. i just read this post after reading your last one and commenting.. sounds like i was right. an article about blogs, blogging and the blogosphere without a single URL? ha! i bet the author barely knows how to manage his own email… much less subscribe to any feeds or really ‘get’ what he’s writing about. we should write the ‘real’ articles this week about whats going on in the vancouver blogosphere. jeff?
