Here’s your assignment: spend a whole day sitting in a sports bar in Charlotte, North Carolina, covering the NCAA March Madness, writing as you go. The Charlotte Observor assigned Tommy Tomlinson to do just that and then published the results on the newspaper web site as Tomlinson wrote it. (NOTE: Registration required at the site, but it’s free.)

Major sports events seem an obvious place for newspaper to blend blogging with usual coverage: while the necessary reportage goes on for the print edition, bloggers can get out colour stories, backgounders, and even the type of humour writing Tomlinson did.
